Success in waterfowling, as with anything in life takes hard work, dedication, adaptability and a good coach. Growing up in a non-traditional waterfowling area, before the advent of the Internet and instructional videos made it next to impossible to learn new skills, tips and tactics. Through the learning journey I can point to several milestones and individuals who helped me along the way contributing to my growth and success in the hunting industry. During the mid-late 80's I saw a TV show featuring a World Champion Goose Caller showcasing his skills. Up to that point the only calls I knew about were resonate cavity calls and a flute called Big River. My lanyard consisted of an Olt 800 and a Ken Martin goose call. The World Champion was Sean Mann; the sounds he reproduced were like none other and it was that day which inspired me to become a better goose caller. A few years later I attended a "Goose Festival" in a nearby town. One of the events was a goose calling contests. Several callers from around the Midwest attended to showcase their skills. The goose caller's identity that left a lasting impression of realism was none other than Tim Grounds. I attribute much of my success to the foundation laid by those initial moments of inspiration and future guidance. Without teachers there would be no students. As a way of improving my calling I started entering goose calling contests in the mid 90's, finishing in the top five in 56 of 60 goose calling championships, using 6 different calls from 4 different call makers. Winning over twenty titles including the 2000 World Goose Calling Championship, and the 2002 World Team Goose Calling Championship, which I share with Kelley Powers. I have since retired from singles goose-calling contests in 2002 to focus on helping others improve their calling/hunting skills.
